You booked a portrait session!

Now you’re probably wondering, what should I wear?

IS THERE A GOOD TIME AND PLACE FOR PHOTOS?

YES! Outdoors, in natural light. Sessions should begin 1-2 hours before sunset- depending on the length of the session you have booked –– during the “golden hour”. This is when the light in the sky is the most magical and flattering.

WHY DOES STYLING MATTER?

Your photos are more than just photos, they are art and a way to preserve your memories for years to come. Choose outfits that reflect your style and personality- however the colors, textures and styles you choose for your session will impact the final product. Sometimes outfits might look great in real life, but not photograph well or distract from you and your loved ones.

Here’s some basic styling principles

COLOR

You want the colors you wear to help you stand out in the environment. In general, think about warm, neutral, earthy, rich and vibrant tones. No two people should wear the same color!! Choose colors that complement each other instead of being the same. Avoid neon colors at all costs. They will bounce up into faces and leave color casts on skin.

TEXTURE & PATTERNS

Textures can help add movement and dimension to your images. Textures can range from long flowy dresses, cozy sweaters, denim jackets, gauzy skirts and dresses or bold jewelry. Patterns can add a fun dimension as well, but try to keep them subtle.  Choose medium sized patterns, since large or tiny prints can appear too busy.

CONTRAST

Contrast is the principle of varying depths of tone. Choosing the same tone of clothing amongst the subjects in your session can make everyone blend together. Try to aim for varying tones to build depth in your images.

OTHER TIPS

  • Consider the location of the session when choosing your outfits. For example, don’t wear a lot of greens in a green park, or don’t wear a floral pattern when surrounded by flowers.

  • Shorts should be worn by toddlers or young children only.

  • Don’t be shy when it comes to makeup! Your makeup will appear lighter in photos, so it’s a good idea to apply it a bit darker than you normally would. And say yes to false lashes!

  • Empty your pockets! Phones, wallets and keys will create a bulge in your pockets, making your pants look bulky or lumpy.

  • Lose the Apple watch. Technology is great, but could appear dated many years down the road. Stick with a classic wristwatch, bracelet, or nothing at all.

  • Choose shoes that look nice with your outfit, but are comfortable to walk in. We may be walking around to different areas. Make sure you are comfortable, or bring a comfy pair of shoes with you to change into when moving around.

  • Iron your clothes. Wrinkles will be even more noticeable in your images, and will be distracting and messy looking.

  • Keep your nails neat and tidy. That doesn’t mean you have to get a manicure, but your hands or feet may be in some images, so make sure that your nails are shaped and filed.
